Safe Disposal of Needles and Sharps: How We Handle the Growing Demand
Recently, we’ve seen a noticeable rise in the number of used needles and sharps that need to be safely removed. A common question we hear is, “How are these items disposed of without posing a risk?”
Safe Disposal Process for Sharps
To ensure proper handling, we use sharps bins for the disposal of all used needles and sharp objects. These bins are specifically designed with a secure lid to prevent any accidental exposure. You can get a sharps bin on prescription from your GP or local pharmacist.
Once the sharps bin is full, it’s safely taken to a pharmacy on the Isle of Wight. From there, a specialized company collects the bins and transports them to the mainland, where they are incinerated—ensuring they are safely and permanently disposed of.
Prioritizing Health and Safety
Our top priority when dealing with sharps waste is health and safety. Handling needles or sharp objects improperly can be extremely dangerous, as they can puncture the skin and pose serious risks. We follow all safety protocols to ensure our team and the public are fully protected.
Needles, in particular, come with a significant risk of spreading blood-borne infections such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV. This is especially true with needles used to inject illegal drugs, which carry a higher potential for contamination.

If you encounter any used needles or sharps, you can trust that our trained team will safely collect and dispose of them. We are committed to making the Isle of Wight a safer place by managing these hazardous materials responsibly.
